A Proud History When Dr. John Q. A. Stewart founded Stewart Home School in 1893, no longer were hospitals and institutions there to protect and nurture people with disabling conditions. They were maintained to protect the public at large from disabled people, especially those with mental retardation or mental illness. It was an effort to transform everyone who is different to be "just like me," rather than to be themselves.Five Generations of CaringFor five successive generations the Stewart family has provided a setting for enriched lifestyles for intellectually disabled children and adults from around the world. Today, each Student
becomes an integral part of the fabric that makes up Stewart
Home School. Dr. John P. Stewart, current chairman of the board
and resident physician at the school, continues the tradition
of the school's proud past and extends its dynamic opportunities
for the future.A Place to Live, to Learn, to LoveStewart Home School occupies the historic campus of the old Kentucky Military Institute, as well as an adjoining 850 acres of serene rural farmland in Frankfort, Kentucky. Originally a resort, and now on the National Register of Historic Places, the school offers a one-of-a-kind community where the intellectually disabled are appreciated for the people they are. |
